Medical Interest Club (MIC) and Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD)

SPONSOR:  Mrs. Vickie McCullough, Certified School Nurse

WHAT IT DOES AND HOW IT CAN HELP YOU

The Medical Interest Club (MIC) and the Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) has three main purposes.  The first purpose is to help students learn of the unlimited opportunities available to them in the medical field.  The second purpose is to educate the members and fellow students regarding the risks and consequences of destructive decisions regarding drugs and alcohol.  The third purpose is to aid in charitable and community work.

Last school year, the club organized two very successful blood drives.  The members of the MIC/SADD were very instrumental in the success.

In May of 2007, MIC/SADD sponsored a very successful Mock Drunk Driving Accident/Funeral Scenario.  Junior and Senior students were able to see how drinking and driving just do not mix.  This was presented during Prom Season.  There was a luncheon offered to all of the community volunteers.  The Drunk Driving them was carried throughout the day.  Every 5 minutes a student was "killed" in a drunk driving accident.  Victims wore shirts depicting the time they passed away.  They were not permitted to talk for the remainder of the day due to the fact that they were now deceased.  Students were also named "drunk drivers" and wore t-shirts depicting so.  The day was very solemn at BVA.

There will be opportunities to listen to speakers on various health-related professions.  Health-related profession field trips and mentor shadowing opportunities will be offered.

ANNUAL ACTIVITIES

Every year the club is responsible for these events:

The club brings in various professionals of the medical field. The speakers discuss the necessary education, salary, and the purpose and responsibilities of the profession.  In addition to learning from the speakers, the club also helps members to get hands-on experience. Members perform volunteer work at local hospitals, care homes, ambulance services, widow lunches, and many other places.  Health profession-related field trips and mentor shadowing opportunities are also offered.

Safety Bug Day

On April 8, seniors and juniors were exposed to the dangers of driving while impaired.  The Safety Bug was provided by a grant from Erie Insurance called the Lookin' Out Program.   The vehicle simulates impaired driving, due to drugs or alcohol.  Some students were designated “Impaired Drivers" and had passengers in their cars.  The other students witnessed the seemingly dangerous situation in which the students were engaged.
